Flooring Options for Your Basement

Basement Flooring

If you are planning to finish or renovate your basement, you will need to choose basement flooring. Before making a decision, try to consider the humidity level in your basement, as well as the likelihood that the space may flood at some point in the future. The following are some of the flooring options available for your basement.

Carpet Tile

Most basements have a concrete slab, atop which you will install your flooring. It is important to manage the amount of moisture that comes up through your slab. There are carpet tiles available which have a vapor barrier to help manage dampness. In the event of flooding, these tiles can be removed, washed and reinstalled.

Ceramic Tile

Whatever type of basement flooring you choose, it will need to be as water resistant as possible. This is because basements are prone to dampness, and there is always the possibility that the area will flood during a rainy season. Ceramic tile is one flooring material that can withstand moisture and even full blown flooding. This tile also can be installed on a concrete slab with no underlayment required, which may help conserve valuable headroom.

Vinyl Tile

Vinyl tile is another possible option for your basement’s floors. This type of tile comes in attractive patterns and finishes that can emulate the warmth of wood or natural stone. Vinyl tiles are attached with powerful glue and may be able to outlast water exposure or basement flooding.

Engineered Wood

Some people may choose engineered wood for their basement floors. This type of flooring is somewhat resistant to moisture but is likely to be damaged by significant flooding. If you choose engineered wood, you may someday have to replace your basement floor in the aftermath of a flood.

Finishing Your Basement

Whatever floor you install in your basement, try to ensure that it is as resistant to moisture as possible. There is always a chance your basement may become flooded. Good basement flooring should be able to withstand water while remaining strong and solid.
